Management Team

Dr. Rita Kandel is the Chief Medical Officer of Mount Sinai Services. She is also Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Professor and Chair, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, at the University of Toronto.  She is cross-appointed to the Department of Surgery and is a member of the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering. She is a clinician-scientist and Director of the Bioengineering of Skeletal Tissues Team, which consists of a multidisciplinary group of investigators, whose work focuses on musculoskeletal regenerative medicine. She  earned her medical degree from the University of Toronto and completed Post-Doctoral fellowships at both Harvard and Tufts Universities. Dr. Kandel has published over 210 papers. She has received several awards including induction as a Fellow of Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

Carl Schubert  is Director, Marketing and Client Service at Mount Sinai Services. Carl earned his MBA (Marketing and Policy) from Schulich School of Business and his BBA (Finance and Economics) from Wilfrid Laurier University. Prior to joining Mount Sinai Services, Carl advanced through the ranks of marketing within Sanofi, Pfizer, Medexus and most recently led client service and strategy for a technology focused communications agency. Carl is an award winning and experienced marketing professional with a uniquely strong background in both healthcare and consumer marketing. He has led numerous successful product launches and other large cross-functional projects, in both large multinational and small startup organizations. Carl’s experience across a variety of demanding roles has provided him with a high level of strategic thinking, customer focus, and deadline-driven tactical expertise.

Dr. George Charames is Director, Advanced Molecular Diagnostics at Mount Sinai Services. He also has a senior appointment with Mount Sinai Hospital and is Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. He holds a PhD from the University of Toronto and undertook postgraduate training in clinical molecular genetics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Amongst other high profile molecular projects, Dr. Charames has implemented Next Generation Sequencing technology for the detection of genes (BRCA1/BRCA2) associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancers (HBOC). He is also interested in the development of novel genomic approaches for the application to other areas of genetic medicine, including pharmacogenomics. Dr. Charames has established strong collaborations with experts in the field of proteomics and biomarker discovery. As an integral part of the MSS team, Dr. Charames oversees all molecular diagnostic projects and provides deep technical insights to help clients achieve their milestones and retain their competitive advantage.

Dr. Hilde Vandenberghe is the Laboratory Director of Mount Sinai Services. Hilde got her Honors B.Sc degree as Pharmacist from Belgium and completed her Master of Science degree followed by her Ph.D. from University of Toronto. Hilde acquired her Diploma in Clinical Chemistry and F.C.A.C.B. Certifications as Clinical Chemist by Canadian Society of Clinical Chemists. Dr. Vandenberghe has Certification from American Board of Clinical Chemistry in Clinical Chemistry and Toxicological Chemistry since 1996.
